Greg Etter enters his fourth season as the football head coach at Concordia University Wisconsin.  Under his leadership the program has earned two second place finishes in the Northern Athletics Conference. Etter’s team has an overall Northern Athletics Conference record of 12-9 and has produced 33 NAC All-Conference, an All-Region, and an All-American selection.

Since his arrival, the program has grown to over 120 participants. Etter places a strong emphasis on academics, which resulted in a team grade point average 2.9. In total, 55 players have been named NAC Scholar Athletes list. His program has also been involved with various community service projects, namely the Longario Family Housing Project, Canned Food Drive, Dance for Diabetes, Read Across America, Cedarburg Education Association, and working with local youth football organizations.

Most recently the football team started May Madness, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The tournament is comprised of three divisions:  men’s, women’s, and co-ed, with the proceeds donated to building a monument to honor our Military Veterans.

Etter has coached at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels of competition during his 19 years as an assistant coach. During that time he has worked under four separate coach of the year award winners. Prior to his arrival at CUW he was the Defensive Coordinator at Carthage College. Carthage’s defenses were nationally ranked in turnovers, scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, and pass efficiency defense. In 2004 the Redman defense led the nation in interceptions. Etter’s success led him to being selected to the American Football Monthly Hot Coaches List, which recognizes the top 80 coaches in the country. The 2004 Carthage team ended the season as the No. 5 ranked team in the country.

Prior to Carthage, Etter spent 12 seasons at South Dakota State University, where he held the titles of Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, and Defensive Backfield Coach. During his tenure he coached the No. 1 punter in NCAA Division II in 1996 and produced the No. 3 kickoff return unit in NCAA Division II in 1994. Etter’s secondary set a school record for interceptions, while the defense was the conference leader in turnover margin and pass defense.  Two of his former players went on to play in the NFL – Adam Vinatieri, kicker, Indianapolis Colts and Scott Connot, defensive back, Kansas City Chiefs.

Etter’s college coaching career began at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he helped coach the defensive backs. While at UW-Madison, he had the opportunity to coach Troy Vincent, who was the seventh overall selection in the 1992 NFL Draft. As a young member of head coach Barry Alvarez’s staff, Etter developed his coaching philosophy and approach based on the day-to-day operations from UW-Madison’s program, a perennial Big Ten winner.

Etter and his wife Kerry, who is an elementary school teacher, have two sons, Mason and Blake.
